So, Ladyfest Ten is nearly here, you’ve got your tickets all booked and you want to know what the score is?

Well, here you go. Now, this is might look complicated, but that’s only because we’ve got so much going on across several venues. We’ve kept it as simple as we can, promise.  So without further ado:

FRIDAY

Advance tickets can be collected from The Horatia from 11am. Tickets for the rest of the festival will also be on sale here throughout the weekend.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY

All the music for Saturday & Sunday is happening at The Relentless Garage, so if you want to buymusic tickets or collect ones you’ve already bought, that’s where you need to go. The box office at The Garage will open at 2.15pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

For ‘rest of the fest’ passes, you can buy tickets or collect tickets bought in advance from eitherThe Horatia or The Resource Centre. On both days, the Resource Centre will be open from 10am – 5pm, and The Horatia be open from 11am until late.

To collect advance tickets, please make sure you print off your email confirmation receipt and bring it with you so we can tick you off our lists.

Well crikey moses – what a way to kick off the Ladyfest Ten celebrations! Taking place on Fri 12 Nov at The Horatia, the tenth anniversary of Ladyfest will launch with a panel debate centred about the hugely important question:

LADYFEST IS TEN BUT WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

Come meet some of the organisers and kick start your weekend of festivities with an amazing line-up of creative women and feminist activists. Discuss and debate the advances of women in the music and creative industries and DIY culture over the last decade and let’s see if we can’t predict where it will lead another ten years from now!

Not only will be discussing some vital issues, but the panel plays host to some seriously incredible speakers. 

******** MEET THE PANEL *******

VIV ALBERTINE
Musician, singer, song writer (including with The Slits); Film maker; Sculptor and Writer

Born Sydney, Australia. French/Corsican father, Swiss mother. Brought up in North London (Muswell Hill). Quite poor. Comprehensive school. Favourite subjects, buying records; clothes, boys, art, English. Age17 went to art school. Dropped out and worked at Dingwalls, music venue Camden Town. Went to another art school met Mick Jones, saw The Sex Pistols first show. Bought Horses, Patti Smith. Dropped out. Bought Les Paul Junior with £200 my grandmother left me. Formed a band with Sid Vicious, Sarah and Palmolive called The Flowers of Romance (named by John Lydon). Started to learn to play guitar. Taught by Keith Levene who I have known since we were kids. He taught me that any sounds can go together, he really developed my ear and loads of other stuff. Johnny Thunders taught me how to do screamers (his name) and Joe Strummer, to tap my foot and play at the same time. I didn’t have sex with any of them. Saw The Slits play their first show, called them the next day. We got together I back-combed their hair like The New York Dolls. We looked like a band. After The Slits I went to film school. Didn’t drop out. Directed stuff for about ten years. Made some money not art. Now making sculpture and writing / recording / performing my own songs.

KAT BANYARD
Author of ‘The Equality Illusion’; Director of UK Feminista and named this year by the Guardian as ‘the most influential young feminist in the country’.

Kat Banyard is author of The Equality Illusion: The Truth About Women and Men Today, published by Faber and Faber. She is also director of UK Feminista – an organisation which supports and promotes grassroots feminist activism. Kat was previously Campaigns Officer at the Fawcett Society and Women’s Development Worker at the Northern Refugee Centre. BRIDGET CONOR
Lecturer in media and cultural studies and gender theory at Goldsmiths College, UL. She is interested in considering how attitudes to female creativity have changed over the last ten years and what research Ladyfesters think feminist academics should be focusing on in the next ten years.

Bridget Conor has a Ph.D. in Media and Communication studies from Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she also teaches media and cultural studies and gender theory. Her research has recently focused on creative labour in screen production industries, particularly screenwriting work. Previously, Bridget taught and studied in Auckland, New Zealand, her research based on a study of the New Zealand film industry and the making of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In the course of her work, Bridget has become particularly interested in the gendered dimensions of creative production and creativity itself and is pursuing further research on these issues, and on the continued under-representation of women in screen production industries.

“I’m excited to be a part of Ladyfest 2010 and to share ideas, strategies and stories with other Ladyfesters. I’m particularly interested in considering how attitudes to female creativity have changed over the last ten years and to contribute to a broader debate about creativity and gender itself. I’d also like to hear from fellow Ladyfesters on the question of what kinds of research feminist academics should be focusing on in the next ten years.”

LEE BEATTIE
Lee attended the first ever Ladyfest in Olympia in 2000 and was so inspired with the event she ran back to Glasgow and kick-started the first UK Ladyfest in 2001.

We’ve had a couple of questions about two subjects recently and so we thought we’d make things good and clear here:

1. Age restrictions ||

We realised on our ticketing page that we might not have been 100% clear on the issues of children attending the festival. As stated, all ticket holders must be 16 +. However, children are of course welcome to attend the festival, as long as they are accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Unfortunately events at The Garage will be 16 +. The Horatia (as an alcohol-vending venue) will permit entrance to children at their discretion. Please note, although kids are welcome, some festival content and events may not be suitable for children, and we do not operate a Ladyfest creche service (but we can point you in the direction of people in the area who do!)

2. Friday Night music ||

As we have announced, the Fri night music will now be taking place at The Horatia – we’ve had a couple of questions around the ticketing for this event.

* Beats Workin’ is now included in the Rest of the Fest Fri pass. It is also covered by a Weekend Music pass.

* Planning to attend Fri night music and nothing else? Buy a Fri Rest of the Fest pass here.

* Planning to attend the cabaret and workshops on Fri? Buy a Fri Rest of the Fest pass here and you will gain entry to both all Fri programming, including Beats Workin’.

* Attending music on Fri, Sat & Sun? You will need to purchase a Weekend Music pass here.

* Planning on attending music on Sat & Sun and have already purchased a weekend music pass? Aces – you will have entry to the Fri music at The Horatia, in addition to the evening’s events taking place after the music finishes (the cabaret).

GINGER SNAPS [2001] Now celebrated as a feminist horror favourite, this obscure Canadian release written by Karen Walton has developed a cult following. The story follows two death-obsessed teenage sisters, Ginger and Brigitte, whose close bond is put to the test when Ginger is attacked by a werewolf and begins to exhibit some strange behaviours. In this girl-friendly take on pubescent body-horror, expect plenty of menstruation metaphors, some killer one-liners , and a lot of blood spill.

JENNIFER’S BODY [2009] In this controversial ‘feminist slasher movie’, written by Diablo Cody (Juno), Megan Fox stars as a possessed high school girl hell bent on devouring her male peers, while best friend (played by Amanda Seyfried) tries to stop her. Whether you choose to think of it as a feminist masterpiece or an example of Hollywood femsploitation, the film manages to entwine light-hearted high school movie archetypes with more challenging themes of sexual violence, trauma, and girls’ empowerment . Darkly witty, ironic and at times genuinely terrifying – this one is sure to spark debate.

Unfortunately, due to escalating costs (which we have been uncomfortable passing on to the ticket buyer) we have moved the Fri night music (Beats’ Workin‘) at Ladyfest Ten from The Garage to THE HORATIA. Sadly, this means Shunda K will no longer be performing at this event. However, the rest of the incredible artists will still be performing and it looks set to be a great show.

Given the venue alteration, the Fri night music will now be covered by a Friday or Weekend ‘Rest of the Fest Pass’ (£12.50 advance for one day, or £30 advance for the whole weekend). This Rest of the Fest Pass will also give you access to the theatre, literature, debate and cabaret programming on the Friday…

This also means the price of the Weekend Music Pass has been reduced, and is now just £25!! Visit our ticket page to nab yourself one…

We need a team of volunteers to help deliver Ladyfest Ten, a not-for-profit, independent arts festival celebrating and promoting women’s creativity and talent.  The festival takes place includes music, literature, arts, craft, comedy, cabaret and much, much more. Location: Highbury Corner. Venues incl. The Relentless Garage, The Horatia, Holloway Resource Centre and other North London venues.

Roles available include sound engineers, stewards, stage managers, merchandise sales, venue managers and many other opportunities. Experience how this fantastic festival works, add real value and be part of our brilliant team.

All we ask is that you volunteer for a minimum of 12 hours. This can be broken up into shifts. For example: three shifts of four hours or two shifts of six hours over the three days/nights of the festival (see application pack for details). In exchange you get a wondrous weekend pass with access to every Ladyfest event.

Swallows and Amazons: JAPAN special
featuring models HANAMI HANNAH & EMPRESS MAZUKI

With Japanese ink and manga drawing techniques, this week at the salon we’ll look to Japanese art and culture for inspiration, as models play with and question female stereotypes and imagery of Japanese women such as the geisha and the samurai, submission and strength. Hosted by Cherry Blossom Bakewell sharing Japanese drawing ideas, with MODELS geisha Hanami Hannah & Empress Mazuki the female samurai. Celebrating women in all their naked and knickerbockered glory, each week we present models that are nude, semi-nude and costumed to inspire artwork that can be submitted to be part of Ladyfest Ten’s art exhibition.

TUES 19th OCTOBER
Swallows and Amazons: FOLK special

This week’s theme for sketchers to be inspired by and explore is ENGLISH FOLK. Featuring THE BELLES OF LONDON CITY female morris dancing trio performing and posing, accompanied by live music. Plus THE GREEN WOMAN. Think Wicker Man, think maypoles, think a folk-load of inspiration to draw…

TUES 26th OCTOBER
Swallows and Amazons: DEATH BECOMES HER Halloween Special

As twilight descends on the salon, beware a mass graveyard-full of the deadliest life models in town. Featuring Jackie-O-Lantern, werewolf versus vampire battle scenes, zombie prom queens and mummified models posing for your drawing pleasure. Mark All Hallow’s Eve early with some killer mark making and prepare for your page to get more than a little blood splattered…With your ghostly host Raven Rouge dishing out drawing tricks and treats to a soulless soundtrack from Storm in a Teacup. The final salon before Ladyfest Ten’s main festival weekend.

Plans for Ladyfest Ten this November are well underway and we are looking for a range of films to screen that celebrate women’s creativity and the moving image.

We have a list of featured topics and would like to see films by women filmmakers (mixed-gender productions are welcome, as long as there is at least one woman or girl on the creative team, i.e., director, writer, cinematographer) that speak to the following themes:

* Body image and self-(re)presentation, for example: the veil, hair, the beauty industry
* Violence, for example: domestic violence, war, sexual violence
* The dangerous woman, for example: the femme fatale, the single woman
* Activism, for example: reproductive rights, equal pay
* Overlooked women/missing women in cultural movements, for example: women of the New Wave
* Legacy and herstories, for example: women’s created culture and its influence

How you interpret these themes is up to you. We hope there is enough here to inspire you to send in your work.

We are also looking for experimental films on any topic from women filmmakers (see proviso above). These should be creative, original, inspiring and embody the DIY ethic that underpins Ladyfest.

Work should be under 30 minutes in length. We would prefer footage on a disc as an uncompressed AVI or MOV format. Please send to:

This is where you come in. If you have any footage of previous Ladyfests we would love to include it in our archive.
It can be short or long, edited or unedited it doesn’t matter as long as it’s of Ladyfest.

If you want to be part of this huge project then send us some of your footage.

We would prefer footage on a disc as an uncompressed AVI or MOV format but if it is on another format then you can send it us via Megaupload.
